About
About Prepared American
Calm, practical guides that help everyday households get ready for storms, outages and the other disruptions life brings.
Prepared American is an independent publication about everyday household preparedness. We write plain-English guides that help families get ready for the situations they are most likely to face: severe weather, power outages, evacuations, home emergencies and the ordinary disruptions that come with life.
What we cover
- Water and food: how much water to store, how to keep it fresh, and how to build a pantry your household will actually use.
- Kits and supplies: 72-hour kits, home first aid kits and the document file that makes recovery easier.
- Home and power: power outages, safe backup power and getting the house ready for winter.
- Family plans: communication plans, evacuation planning, and including pets and older relatives.
Our approach
Preparedness works best when it feels manageable. We aim to be calm rather than alarming, specific rather than vague, and practical rather than theoretical. Every guide is built around steps a typical household can take with the space, time and budget it already has.
Where it is natural, we point to widely published guidance from public agencies and established organizations, such as FEMA's Ready.gov, the National Weather Service, the CDC, the USDA and the American Red Cross. We are not affiliated with any of them. Local officials always have the final word in an emergency, and our guides say so.
What we do not do
- We do not publish fear-based content, political commentary or speculation.
- We do not accept payment for editorial coverage, and our blog articles do not contain product promotions, prices or affiliate links.
- We do not invent experts. Our articles are published under the byline "Prepared American Editorial Team."
Some separate pages on this site, such as special offer or partner pages, may contain links to partner services. Those pages are explained in our Affiliate Disclosure, and they are kept apart from our editorial articles.
